![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Another scenario would be conducting a task while mobile, moving from handheld to keyboard operations and back. There seemed to be some delay on certain user interface operations but I can imagine using this to replace some activities that might otherwise involve a laptop, specifically anything that can be done in a browser or app and using the cloud. Samsung has something called DeX (Desktop eXperience? ) which is a shell that provides a better user interface for working with external hardware than the Samsung phone default. When I tried connecting it to the monitor, I was impressed. It has a USB type C port for charging and data exchange. Some time ago I wound up with a Samsung Galaxy S10+. (Full disclosure, I actually plug a 3.5mm audio cable, a network cable, and a power cable into the laptop as well not quite wireless yet). This type of connection might even provide enough power to avoid using the laptop battery. Basically, I use a USB type C cable to connect the laptop to the monitor and then I have an external screen, keyboard, and mouse, using whatever audio comes with the display. ![]() That monitor also has USB ports (the kind into which you plug USB devices), so I plug my keyboard and mouse into those. My most recent monitor has a USB type C port as well. My last two laptops have had the new larger USB type C port (not the ports into which you plug USB devices such as mice, but a port like those typically at the bottom of a droid phone). ![]() ![]() Neither Apple File System nor HFS+ works with Windows, however. Any drive formatted with HFS+ will work just fine with a Mac that's running High Sierra or later. There are many benefits to switching from HFS+ to APFS, including better security thanks to native encryption, but the most important thing to note for external-drive shoppers is backward-compatibility. ![]() It's simply called the Apple File System (APFS), and it's the first format to be used across both Macs and iOS devices. Starting with macOS "High Sierra," Cupertino ditched its venerable Mac OS Extended file system, commonly abbreviated as HFS+, and switched to an entirely new file system. Before we get to Thunderbolt, we need to address a basic building block of hard drives that has always affected compatibility, and probably always will: the file system.Īn external drive's file system is the most important factor that determines whether or not it's readable by Macs, PCs, or both. We'll start with a breakdown of our favorite external drives for Macs, followed by a guide to how to shop for the best one for you. Read on as we solve this and all of your other Mac external-storage quandaries. In fact, in many cases it makes sense to choose an inexpensive non-Thunderbolt drive that isn't targeted toward Mac use. So what's a Mac user to do who just wants to back up his or her files using Time Machine, or stash a large video collection? Spoiler: A Thunderbolt drive isn't your only option far from it. As a result, they are typically external SSDs, or even multidrive RAID arrays, which means they also tend to be expensive. ![]() The main difference is that many drives made specifically for Macs use the upgraded Thunderbolt data transfer protocol, which promises super-fast data transfers for photographers and video editors who need to store mountains of footage and access it very quickly. Most laptops with either operating system now come with at least one oval-shaped USB-C port, and it's the one you'll want to use for connecting your external drive. Buying an external hard drive or SSD for your Mac is not all that different from buying one for your Windows PC. ![]() ![]() ![]() This provides us with a neat and easy way of working out the highest decimal number we can represent with any given number of binary bits. So 255 is the highest decimal number we can represent using 8 binary bits. So that’s 2 to the eight minus 1 equals 255. One of these numbers will, of course be a zero, making it 255 as the highest decimal number we can represent with a group of 8 bits. 8 binary bits enables us to represent 2 to the eight different decimal numbers. Because there’s a 1 in each position this would result in adding together 2 to the seven, 2 to the six, 2 to the five, 2 to the four, 2 to the three, 2 to the two, 2 to the one and 2 to the zero giving 255.īut there’s a quicker way than this. ![]() ![]() Or we could calculate it ourselves using the weighting system I discussed in Part 1 of this session. What would this be in decimal? We could go for the easy way of answering this question which would be to use a binary-to-decimal converter – maybe one of those I showed you in Part 2 of this session. What’s the highest decimal number we can represent using 8 bits? Well, the highest 8-bit number has a 1 in every place. A group of 8 bits is often referred to as an octet. When representing an IP address as a decimal number, we actually deal with these groups in pairs. You can see how difficult it is to read this number, so for convenience I’ll show the 32 binary numbers in groups of four bits. To a computer, this would look like this. ![]() Remember we started off this session in Part 1 with a reminder of what an IP address and a MAC address look like.Ĭomputers can only recognise these addresses as a series of zeros and ones, but humans find long strings of zeros and ones difficult to read and interpret so this is why we represent them in this way.Īn IPv4 address is in fact a 32-bit binary number which, as you know from Part 1, provides nearly 4 million 3 hundred different addresses.īut let’s just focus on the IP address. In this video I’ll look at IP addresses, specifically IP version 4 addresses and in the next video I’ll look at MAC addresses. Now you’re familiar with the idea of representing numbers with different number bases, we’ll have a closer look at how network addresses are represented. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Version 5 comes with a lot of new features, like GPU ray-casted clouds instead of the particle-based clouds in v4, volumetric clouds that extend to the horizon and interact much more realistic with the light. Cirrocumulus, Nimbostratus and Stratocumulus will be available in the near future. ![]() RWC will able to process a wide variety of cloud identifiers, such as Cirrus, Cumulus, Stratus, Cumulonimbus and Towering Cumulus. To further crank up the realism a few notches, they advise combining the cloud engine SkyMaxx Pro with the Sundog Software’s Real Weather Connector, so you have more detailed weather, without abrupt changes. Running behind the scenes eliminates the need for a learning curve, and Maxx-XP promises amazing visual effects. SkyMaxx Pro uses its own cloud and weather rendering engine, disabling the X-Plane’s engines in the process. It’s been a while, but following X-Aviation’s announcement a few weeks ago, Maxx-XP launched the next chapter in the story of their cloud engine into the X-Plane skies, with the release of SkyMaxx Pro v5. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() After years of waiting, it's now truly arrived on Apple's tablet.
